Job Description

Software Developer (Ruby on Rails)

Location Bath / Hybrid

Salary £30-40k

We are pleased to be working with a UK Social Enterprise and B Corp company on a mission to streamline and simplify grant research and application management.

The Founder is a recognised leader in the grant industry and wanted to create a platform that makes it easier and more efficient for charities to access grants (it was found that charities spend over £1.1bn per year writing grant application, 66% of which fail).  After consultation with hundreds of charities, foundations, grant makers and local authorities, our client was founded in May 2019.  They are now an integral part of the grant management process across the UK for charities and nonprofits.

We are now looking for a Ruby on Rails Developer to join the team based in Bath to help drive the development of the platform which is radically innovating the charitable grants sector.  You'll play an integral role in shaping the success of the platform which has already been hailed as a game changer for the not-for-profit sector.

The Role

You will be working as an integral part of the new product team, helping drive the application and its capabilities.  You'll work closely with the Head of Product, implementing changes to the application based on the expansive roadmap, user feedback and data driven requirements.  You'll have the flexibility and freedom to work with the team to drive and implement creative solutions, using the tech you enjoy and find interesting.

This is a unique role and opportunity, contributing innovation to a sector in need, whilst learning and expanding your technical prowess.

Skills Required

  • You must have relevant experience in web development, particularly utilising Ruby on Rails, TailwindCSS .
  • You should have experience working with developers of different skill levels (using Git and GitHub, code reviews, pair programming). They have strong ambitions to grow their product team and, as the software engineering team grows, you’ll be helping set standards and guide the path forward.
  • You should have a firm appreciation for a positive user experience and take pride in delivering quality and well thought-out work.
  • You should be keen to develop your skills and have an interest in working creatively; this might include providing input into initial wireframing & planning user interface workflows, taking precedence from existing UI or design systems.
  • As part of a close team, you will be encouraged to have input on a range of issues related to your role and the wider enterprise.
  • You should be confident in your ability to work closely with members of the team, challenging decisions and bringing your own skills and expertise to the table.
  • It would be beneficial if you have experience with common testing frameworks and any previous work experience in an environment that utilises Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery.
  • They are using technologies such as Rails, PostgreSQL, Heroku and AWS so any prior knowledge or experience of any of these would be a bonus.
  • Experience integrating with documented third-party APIs to exchange data or kick off workflows would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge or prior work experience within the not-for-profit sector, and perhaps being informed about common workflows and the likely CRMs used (such as Salesforce.org or Blackbaud) would be an advantage.
  • LOCATION - They have regular team sessions, typically in Bath or Bristol, so you will need to be in a position to travel to the South West.

What you'll get in return

This is a great opportunity to work on a ground-breaking product, developing (or continuing to develop) your skills and driving the company's vision for the future of the Third Sector as well as the following benefits:

  • Learning budgets to continue your personal development
  • Allowance for access to co-working spaces if you need to get out of the house or meet up with co-workers in your area
  • Work from home set-up
  • 25 holiday holiday (plus bank holidays) and flexibility around life events
  • Flexible seasonal hours to encourage a healthy work life balance
  • Pension with enhanced 5% matched contributions via salary sacrifice
  • Cycle scheme via salary sacrifice
  • Performance based bonus
  • Company socials and events a plenty, normally with lots of food involved!
